New Paula's Choice Face Masks - Review

March 03, 2018

Paula's Choice has released two new face masks! I have been using both and have fallen more in love with the brand.

The first is the Pore Clarifying Charcoal Gel Mask; a gel-based clay mask that absorbs excess oil, balances skin and minimizes the appearance of large pores without dehydrating skin. It's ideal for people with oily or congestion skin.

The Rehydrating Moisture Mask is a deeply moisturizing and hydrating mask intended for people with normal, dry or very dry skin.

I happen to have normal, dry and oily parts on my face so I really benefited from using both of these masks in targeted areas. I think it's great that people with normal skin can also use both these masks.

(I want to mention my skin has been very acne prone to products lately. It got to the point I had to not put a thing on my face for 3 weeks to stop the acne and get a fresh start. These masks were the first thing i've incorporated into my new routine so far. I've had no issues! They actually seem to be of benefit)

Pore Clarifying Charcoal Gel Mask - $30 USD

''Balance oily skin and decongest pores with charcoal and natural clays suspended in a soothing gel mask for a refreshed, shine-free complexion.''

A mask that targets my clogged pores and oily areas that won't leave my skin feeling tight? Sold! This mask contains a blend of charcoal, kaolin and bentonite clay and tapioca starch that willl absorb skin oil on contact. Soothing agents and willow bark are added to calm the skin. The glycerin is used to restore, hydrate and balance skin.

I've used clay masks before and my skin often feels so tight and dry after. Especially with those masks that you hand mix with water or apple cider vinegar. My skin doesn't seem to respond well to them. This mask does what I want it to. I want the oil on my face to be absorbed. I want my skin to feel smoother and a little more tight without feeling tight. I also don't want that strange clay residue left on my skin that many clay masks leave.

The consistency of this mask is different than most masks of it's kind. It's very thin and has a hard time evenly covering the skin with fingers (a brush is best). That doesn't bother me, it still does almost all of what it promises. I apply it to my t zone and can feel a slight tightening feeling. I leave mine on for 8 minutes rather than 10-15 like recommended because my skin is not that oily. It doesn't dries down fairly fast. I appreciate that it's so easy to remove. It doesn't dry into a thick clay layer that is hard to remove and clogs your drain. I feel a slippery glycerin-like residue when rinsing it but once my face is dry I don't feel it at all. My face feels on the dry side but not super tight like most oil-absorbing masks do to my skin. The pores on my nose look smaller after. Does it pull out blackheads? Not yet, but I really don't expect it to. It should help to prevent new ones from forming though as it really absorbs oil. This mask is not completely necessary for my skin, but i'll keep using it over the months and get back to you if I notice significant improvements. If other oil reducing, decongesting masks irritate your skin and make it too dry, this mask might be for you too.

Rehydrating Moisture Mask - $30 USD

''Smooth, soften and hydrate dry, distressed skin instantly with plant oils and amino acids that create a moisture-locking barrier. This mask is a replenishing last step in your routine for immediate moisturization and lasting hydration.''

I expected that this mask would be heavy and would sit on my skin for as long I let it, sliding all around. It's not like that at all. It initially feels very thick. I thought for it to moisturize well that wet feeling would have to stay. Not at all. It's heavy cream feeling vanishes fast. It sinks into skin without balling off at all. The finish feels like a thin, light layer of moisturize. It's not an oily feeling but skin-realistic. Not sticky. My skin feels MUCH more moisturized with it than without it. Super balanced. Naturally plump and quenched. It's THE BEST for me. I can even wear it under makeup. I think people who have mildly dry skin that are also acne prone skin would appreciate it. It's not the heaviest mask/cream in the world but it provides a substantial moisturize boost. Once I use it up, I might buy it to use as an everyday moisturizer. I LOVE IT.
