A Visit To Hand & Stone Spa

December 04, 2017

A pr agency recently reached out to me about doing a post in collaboration with Hand & Stone Spa. They were kind enough to set up a visit with a complementary facial. I've never had a professional facial (or massage) in my life so this was a very exciting opportunity. I had an awesome facial. My skin went in dry and rough and left super smooth, quenched and glowing. I also felt super relaxed and was more knowledgeable about skincare than before. I definitely want to go back soon!

I talked with the Whitby location spa owners, Louise and Murray Nicholson who told me so much about their store. There skincare brand of choice is Dermalogica, a highly professional and cruelty free brand that is based around science. It's the top of the top of skincare companies. Esthetician schools and professional spas use it. Some of the products are professional-use only but there are also loads of consumer-approved products for sale in their store as well as others. The staff is extremely knowledgable about the brand, taking advanced Dermalogica training on top of their schooling. Customers signed up for the newsletters can be notified of Dermalogica education classes too which is pretty cool. This location has an all around lovely, welcoming atmosphere. If you're in the area, you should definitely check them out.

My Classic Facial Experience

The classic facial is tailored to treat skin conditions such as acne, skin congestion, lack of radiance, skin sensitivity, fine lines and loss of firmness. You’ll enjoy deep pore cleansing, exfoliation and extractions. An excellent treatment for all skin types.

I choose the popular Classic Facial as it sounded prefect for my dry, sensitive and congested skin. There were so many steps involved! It was not only a way to get nicer skin but to relax and learn. My Esthetician & Skin Therapist was Lesly who was amazing and super passionate about her career. There were a lot of steps in the facial that she explained all for me. For the Classic Facial, she used various cleansers, serums, masques, exfoliates, a mist and an eye cream. A whole lot of products were meticulously applied and removed in a certain order. I had shaved my face the day before (yes I do that) so she tweaked some products for me as to not cause my skin irritation. My skin was inspected under a light and magnifying glass. The facial also included an amazing face, neck, shoulder and chest massage. There was some aromatherapy that had a nice lavender smell. Before she proceeded to blackhead extractions on my nose, she steamed my face and used sonic device that gently vibrated my skin to aid the process. I was scared my super sensitive skin would have redness from the extractions but there was none. It was actually a very delicate, pain free process. By the end of it, she handed a mirror to check out my skin and surprise, it was subtle and glowing. She has my skin files on record so if I book another appointment, we could see how my skin is doing.

Lesley's Tips For My Mild Skin Problems

Is that chin breakout hormonal, or from holding your phone too close to your face?

We talked about so much so i'll try to remember as much as I can. She could tell by looking at my skin that I need to start drinking more water. She also noticed my skin was a little textured so she recommended I exfoliate twice a week unless I used a mild daily exfoliant, like a low strength BHA approved for daily use. Her recommendation for my skin was the Daily Microfoliant which is a favourite of Oprah's and a very popular product from Dermalogica. It's a powder that you mix with water to exfoliate skin daily. It releases Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes when mixed with water and contains ingredients to balance unven skintone. Sounds perfect for me. She explained acne on different parts of the face were caused by different things. For example, acne around the jaw area can be hormonally caused. Acne around the temples can be stress related. For myself, my acne could be caused by some of my makeup, not changing my pillowcase enough (i've slacked lately), my hair care products and shaving my jaw area. She recommended I change my pillow case 2-3 times a week, wear my hair up when sleeping, cut down on the hair styling products, wear lighter foundation and watch out for certain ones and to look into other forms of hair removal. As for popping pimples, she said I should stop that, especially if a spot is red, inflamed and irritated as i'll only cause more PIH. I pointed out what I called my under-eye milia and she saw it to be congested but not necessarily milia as milia is more of a hard ball under the skin. So I also need to cut down on heavy cream products under my eyes. Apparently my skin is pretty good!! I have PIH that she said exfoliation will help with and using sunscreen. They also do microdermabrasion, which removes the outer layer of skin using crystals. Even though I heavily research skincare, I left much smarter and more enlightened on what I need to start doing with my skin. I can't image how helpful this information would be to teens who don't know about skin and how to care for it.
